  Eye flu, also known as conjunctivitis, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. It can be caused by viral or bacterial infections, allergies, or irritants. How Eye Flu Occurs: Viral Infections: Viruses, such as adenoviruses, are the most common cause. It can spread through direct contact with an infected person's eye secretions or respiratory droplets. Bacterial Infections: Bacteria like Staphylococcus or Streptococcus can also cause eye flu, often resulting in a thicker, yellowish discharge. It spreads through contact with infected fluids. Allergies: Allergens like pollen, dust mites, or pet dander can trigger allergic conjunctivitis, which is not contagious.
